PERFORMANCE DRIVING

- FROM STREET TO TRACK

GINGERMAN FORMULA STREET SERIES - RACE 1 RESULTS     AUGUST 15, 2009
GingerMan Raceway  -  South Haven, MI

There was another close finish at the recent race at GingerMan Raceway. Many of our regular drivers attended and we had a couple of newcomers. Ray Sweers brought his beautiful track prepared Dodge Viper and Jeff White from the Detroit area came with his Mustang Cobra.

Todd Davis, the 2008 Champion, was on the way with his Buick GS and had an oil leak, so went home and came in his new Dodge Challenger. He was reluctant to track the car and was planning to rent the SATCAR Mustang but eventually decided to race the Dodge.

This made for a varied field, including three Lotus’s. Evan Leicht was the slow qualifier in his VW GTI and started on pole. Ray Sweers was fastest in the Viper and started about nine minutes after Evan. Dan Mroz decided not to start the race as he was being roasted in his Lotus 2 Eleven by the heat coming from the radiator outlet and flowing over the cockpit. There were three DNF’s, including Todd Davis running out of fuel about six laps from the finish. Jeff White was running low on fuel and was slow for the last three laps due to sloshing away from the fuel pickup. Steve Ahlgrim overheated the brakes on his Corvette ZR-1 and stopped just before the end.

The final lap was a thrill to watch. Starting the last lap, Evan held the lead by a slim margin and was in danger of being passed. Then several cars caught Jeff White entering the turns 7 through 10 complex and could not pass the slow moving Mustang. After turn 10, Scott Ahlgrim passed Jeff and Ray Sweers passed both Jeff and Scott to take over second place. Could the Viper pass the VW on the front straight?

Evan had just enough lead to get to the finish line 0.451 seconds ahead of Ray. The slowest and fastest cars finished within one half second after close to an hour of racing. Scott Ahlgrim was third in his Lotus Elise and Jeff White in the Mustang Cobra was fourth. Tom Dillon in a Mustang GT was fifth, one lap back.

The first four cars were within an eight second time window. There are not too many races with that kind of close finish. This race again shows the effectiveness of the SATCAR Performance Parity Time system in equalizing the performance of a wide variety of cars to create fair racing for all drivers.

One of our new drivers commented about how aware and courteous drivers were in watching for faster cars and assisting in passing. There was one on-track spin during the race and no other incidents. SATCAR continues with a very safe racing program. Compliments to all drivers - WELL DONE!!

Another safe, fun, and close SATCAR race!!!
